Hubungan Dukungan Keluarga terhadap Lansia dengan Diabetes Melitus di Wilayah Kerja Puskesmas Krueng Barona Jaya Aceh Besar

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that requires special care, whereas family support can improve the quality of life of the elderly with diabetes. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and the condition of diabetes mellitus among the elderly in Krueng Barona Jaya Community Health Center. This study employed a quantitative correlational design. A total of 71 elderly individuals with diabetes mellitus were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The data were collected using the HDFSS questionnaire to measure family support and blood glucose levels as indicators of diabetes mellitus. The data analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents (52.1%) received high family support, and 47.9% had high blood glucose levels. Thus, this study demonstrates a significant relationship between family support and diabetes mellitus among the elderly (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). The other factor, family appraisal support, also showed a significant relationship with the quality of life of patients with diabetes mellitus. Based on the findings, family support plays a significant role in the management of diabetes mellitus among the elderly. Therefore, the family members are suggested to be involved in taking care of the elderly by providing information, emotional support, appraisal, and instrumental support to help the elderly with diabetes.
