Abstract

This study aims to analyze initial perceptions, the process of perception transformation, and the acceptance of sharia insurance among non-Muslims in Lubuk Pakam District. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four non-Muslim informants who had been active participants in sharia insurance for at least two years, supported by observation and documentation. The data analysis technique employed descriptive analysis through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification using source triangulation and member checking to maintain the credibility of the findings. The results showed that informants' initial perceptions tended to be influenced by the label "sharia" associated with Islam, thus raising doubts at the initial stage. However, after receiving an explanation of the contract, the principle of mutual assistance, and the transparency of fund management, perceptions transformed toward a more rational understanding. Empirical experience during participation, particularly regarding service, transparency, and ease of claims, played a significant role in shaping trust. Public acceptance showed a positive trend, indicated by consistent premium payments, a duration of participation of more than two years, and an intention to continue the program. Informants' decisions were pragmatic and economic, not theological. This study concludes that Islamic insurance is inclusive and acceptable across religions if managed professionally, transparently, and provides tangible benefits. The primary challenge in increasing participation among non-Muslim communities lies not in religious factors, but rather in literacy and effective communication.
